Big Migration: How to Move Files from One Google Drive to Another

Imagine you’re the captain of a spaceship, and your files are precious cargoes that need to be transferred from one starry storage facility to another. Our goal is to make this process as simple and exciting as possible. Ready for this intergalactic journey? Let’s take off!

Step 1: Preparing for Launch

The first step in our mission is to open both Google Drive accounts. Launch your browser and go to Google Drive. Sign in to your first account. For the second account, open a new tab in incognito mode (Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac) – this is your portal to the second world of Google Drive. Now you’re ready to go!

Step 2: Create an Intergalactic Connection

The next step is to establish a connection between your two accounts. In the first account, select the files or folders you want to transfer. Right-click and select Share. Enter the email address of your second account and give it the “Editor” permission. It’s like sending the keys to your starship to another captain.

Step 3: Explore New Horizons

Go to your second Google Drive account. In the left pane, find the “Shared with me” section. This is where all the files and folders shared with you from the first account are stored. Select these files, right-click, and then click Add to my drive. You’ve just moved these files to your new territory, as if you were colonizing a new planet in Stellaris.

Step 4: Create Duplicate Copies

To have full control over the files in the second account, let’s create copies of them. Select all the files you added in the previous step, right-click, and choose Make a copy. Google Drive will automatically create duplicate files that will belong to your second account. It’s similar to how you back up your discoveries in No Man’s Sky in case you have unexpected adventures.

Step 5: Verify and Protect

Make sure all files are transferred correctly. Open a few files in your second account to make sure they contain all the data you need and work properly. If something didn’t transfer, go back to the previous steps and repeat the process for the missing files.

Step 6: Ending the Mission – Security First

If you no longer need access to the files in the first account, you can remove the share. Go back to your first Google Drive account, select the files or folders you shared, right-click, and select Share. Find your second account in the list and change its access to View or Remove access. This is similar to how you set up defensive lines in StarCraft after a successful expansion.

Step 7: Use the Help Tools

If you have a large number of files, you can use synchronization tools such as Google Takeout or third-party programs such as MultCloud or CloudMounter. These tools can automatically transfer large amounts of data between accounts.

  • Google Takeout: Go to Google Takeout, select Google Drive, and create an archive with your files. After downloading the archive, unzip it and upload the files to a second Google Drive account.
  • MultCloud or CloudMounter: These provide easy-to-use interfaces for transferring files between cloud storage services. Sign up for the service of your choice, add both Google Drive accounts.
